“i um.. i’m trying to think of the right way to tell her.” he said quietly, trying to smile.
She wrapped her hand around his under the table, gently squeezing. “Oh. Well I’m sure she’ll be happy no matter how you tell her.” her mom said.
spencer squeezed jj’s hand under the table. “if i catch her at the right time she absolutely will be.”
Her parents exchanged confused looks. “What do you mean catch her at the right time?” JJ’s dad asked after taking a sip of his drink.
“my mom is um, she’s a paranoid schizophrenic,” spencer took a large sip of his wine.
JJ’s mom put down her glass. “Oh, I’m sorry. We didn’t know.” she said quietly. JJ glanced at Spencer, still holding his hand.
“it’s.. it’s okay, she’s um, in a sanitarium in vegas. that’s where i’m from.” spencer licked his lower lip, giving jj’s hand a firm squeeze.
Her dad nodded. “Well that’s good. And you’re from Vegas, huh?” He kept eating.
“i am,” spencer nodded, “and uh, i know, not exactly conventional.
